Daily wagers in Surat’s textile market to go on indefinite strike from Saturday, demanding wage hike

Surat: Tens of hundreds of daily wagers lifting textile goods in the country’s largest man-made fabric wholesale market in Surat will go on an indefinite strike demanding wage hike starting from Saturday.

A decision to this effect was taken at the meeting organized by the Surat District Textile Marketing Transport Labour Union in the presence of the daily wagers lifting parcels in more than a dozen of textile markets on Ring Road.

The agitating workers have been demanding a hike in wages for a quite long time. Following the coronavirus pandemic, the workers are unable to earn their desired income with the phenomenal decrease in the textile business.

The workers have been demanding a hike in the wages for quite a long time, but the traders are opposing stating that the market conditions have turned from bad to worse due to the coronavirus pandemic.

President of the labor union, Umashanker Mishra told HE Reporter, “The prices of diesel and petrol have touched Rs 100 per liter mark, but the wages of workers have not been increased from the last four years. It is difficult for the workers to survive with meager wages when the prices of essential commodities, vegetables, etc. have gone skywards”

Mishra added, “Hundreds of workers employed in over dozen of textile markets on Ring Road have voluntarily decided to go on indefinite strike. Soon, workers in all the 165 textile markets in the city will follow the suit. The transportation of textile goods from the markets will come to a grinding halt from Saturday”
