Surat: The 81st president of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) is Ashish Gujarati, an entrepreneur in textiles and a pioneer in the power loom weaving industry.
The SGCCI’s new president and vice-president were installed in a low-key event amid the coronavirus epidemic. Gujarat BJP President CR Paatil, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) Standing Committee Chairman Paresh Patel, graced the occasion along with Union Minister of State for Textiles and Railways Darshana Jardosh, who was the Chief Guest.
For 2021-22, textile entrepreneur Himanshu Bodawala will serve as the SGCCI’s vice-president. The President and the Vice-President will be in office for one year.
President Dinesh Navadia will step down and be replaced by Gujarati. President of the SGCCI, Navadia, is also the regional head of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).
Gujarati, who has been involved in the SGCCI for many years, was instrumental during the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) and the inclusion of the textile sector. To him, the success of the first yarn bank in Surat is a significant accomplishment.
According to Gujarati, “Surat and South Gujarat are manufacturing hubs for textiles, yarn and grey fabric as well as gems and jewellery, dyes and chemicals, with Dahej and Hazira being the two largest industrial parks. As always, SGCCI will work in unison with industry professionals to improve the region.”
